How does climate change affect us?
Drought: Impact and Measures
Climate change is causing extreme weather events, such as droughts and heavy rainfall, which directly impact Barcelona's green spaces.
These unusual climate phenomena test the resilience of our vegetation and require us to adapt our maintenance practices.
In recent years, Barcelona has experienced severe drought episodes, leading to emergency phases with significant restrictions on potable water supply for municipal services.
Drought response protocols particularly impact the city's parks and gardens, such as the ban on using potable water for irrigation, which hampers the survival of grasses, plants, and trees.
Trees, a priority
In situations of restricted irrigation, priority has been given to the survival of trees using groundwater, as they provide the greatest socio-environmental benefits.
It is important to note that restoring tree cover takes significantly longer than recovering shrubbery or herbaceous vegetation.
To reach all areas when potable water irrigation is prohibited, maintenance vehicles and water tankers are used to irrigate areas without access to the city's groundwater network.
Currently, efforts are underway to expand the network to extend and increase the availability of this resource.
