New agreement for protected wildlife conservation in the Balearic Islands

The Barcelona Zoo and the Islands' government signed the agreement after 15 years of cooperation. The conservation and recovery of native species is one of the Zoo's top priorities, and it’s involved in various related projects.

The agreement will help protect species like the Majorcan midwife toad, the Ibiza wall lizard and the Lilford’s wall lizard.

The first initiative stemming from this agreement has already been completed: nearly a hundred Majorcan midwife toads have been reintroduced to a private estate in the Tramuntana mountains.

The Zoo has facilities and specialised staff that allow for effective ex-situ conservation efforts and breeding programmes aimed at strengthening species populations in their natural habitats.
