Work to stabilise the slopes at Pedrera del Mussol
Work is being carried out to stabilise the slopes at Pedrera del Mussol between now and the end of February 2025, in the section above C/ Jocs del 92 and as far as the Escola Can Clos. The idea is to stop erosion through containing walls and improvements in collecting rainwater. Scuppers and drainage gutters are also being built in C/ Jocs del 92 and at the junction with Pedrera del Mussol, with traffic affected on some days.
The work consists of building a gabion wall (steel mesh cages filled with roughly cut stone) above C/ Jocs del 92, protecting the same street and particularly the Escola Can Clos and the whole neighbourhood from any landslides from the upper section of the mountain, in response to a demand from local people. At the same time, a containing wall will be built at the lower part of the slope, which runs along the side of the school building. New drainage pipes will also be opened up in the slope, with a new gutter to counter the speed of run-off water and reduce the erosion caused by this.
Construction work on the gabion wall only affects part of the pavement on the side nearest the Besòs (Montjuïc) in C/ Jocs del 92. But for two or three days the adjacent parking lane will be occupied at times to open up a new water collection gutter and connect it to the sewerage well. A second stage carried out later will open up water collection channels on the side nearest the Llobregat (La Marina) in C/ Jocs del 92. On some days during the work, traffic circulation will be reduced to just one lane with the direction of traffic to alternate with manually operated signs. It will not be possible to park in this section of C/ Jocs del 92 during the work.
In C/ Pedrera del Mussol, leading into the neighbourhood of Can Clos, water collection gutters connected to the sewerage will also be built, but crossing the road surface. Traffic circulation will be reduced to just one lane on two or three days during the work, with the direction of traffic to alternate with manually operated provisional signs. No work will be carried out that affects traffic circulation on the days when events are held in the Anella Olímpica and the Parc de Montjuïc that draw large volumes of people.
This work is part of the Slope Stabilisation Plan in Montjuïc and in the city of Barcelona as a whole. The Slope Stabilisation Plan arose from the need to address the problem of rockfalls and landslides in recent years caused by a number of episodes of unusually high rainfall, following storm Gloria in 2018. The aim is to ensure that the slopes are more stable when the current period of drought comes to an end, when rain is expected to return in the form of severe storms.
