Itinerary through Gràcia: cultural life and the associations movement in Vila de Gràcia

We offer an itinerary for discovering a whole series of buildings reflecting cultural life and the associations movement in Vila de Gràcia, based on documents conserved at the Arxiu Municipal del Districte de Gràcia. Although Gràcia is pretty well known for its big annual August festival, the event represents the highpoint of social development that oversaw culture throughout its history, especially from the mid-19th century on.

The route through the former Vila de Gràcia starts at Plaça del Nord, where we can find the headquarters of the Lluïsos de Gràcia association, and continues past the Orfeó Gracienc and some of the area’s most historical theatres, such as El Bosque and El Principal. The stroll also includes stops at buildings that tell us about the associations movement in Gràcia, such as Societat Obrera l’Artesà [Crafts Worker Society] and the building that had once been the Cooperativa de Teixidors a Mà [Hand Weavers Cooperative], the final stop on this itinerary.
