The Annual Festival. Games, snacks and traditional dances in the Gràcia of yesteryear

We invite you to come and take part in a visit and workshop aimed at primary school students aged 8-9 to find out about the Municipal Archives of the District of Gràcia (AMDG). This activity gives children the chance to find out about the Archives and the people that work there first-hand, and helps them understand the value of documents in preserving the past and as a management tool for the municipal administration.

The activity consists of two parts, the first being the visit to the archive centre, where students are shown the process a document goes through from when it arrives at the Archives until it is consulted by users. The second part is a workshop in which students look at reproductions of documents conserved by the Archives that are closely linked to the history of the Vila de Gràcia in order to find out about children’s experiences of the annual festival in Gràcia in years gone by.

Learning objectives of the activity:

  • Find out about the functions of the Municipal Archives of the District of Gràcia.
  • Get an idea of the different types of documents kept there.
  • Relate the different areas with the function they perform: classification, description, digitisation, restoration, conservation...
  • Analyse the various writing supports used throughout history.
  • Appreciate the importance of conserving documents, a source of historical knowledge.
  • Get to know the professions linked to the conservation, treatment and dissemination of these documents.
  • Find out about how children experienced the annual festival in years gone by through looking at archive documents.

Educational levels: middle cycle of primary education.

Approximate duration of the activity: 2 hours.

Price: free.

Bookings: by phone 932 177 183 or by email amdg@bcn.cat.
