Colònia Castells Allotment
A new 700 m2 growing space located in Les Corts neighbourhood, within Parc de la Colònia Castells. The allotment includes twenty raised wooden beds, storage areas, a toilet, an office container, two 1 m3 water tanks, a large picnic table, and irrigation points with an automatic watering system.
The Colònia Castells community allotment opened in October 2017. It was originally located on the site now occupied by the park. It had raised beds for social and community use, a large area for composting experiments, a couple of ground-level permaculture beds that also served as a seed bank, and two containers (tool shed and classroom).
The Urban Allotment Espai Colònia Castells in Les Corts is a project born out of the social need for open spaces that allow people to reconnect with their surroundings, and it is built on two pillars: nature and community.
It is a cooperative space for neighbourhood participation and inclusion, in which local residents and various social organisations in Les Corts collaborate, grouped under the Association Hort Urbà Espai Colònia Castells. Decisions are made in assembly.
It is a space that promotes respect for nature through the ecological management of green areas, with organic farming, compost production for soil enrichment, seed collection, and seedling cultivation, etc. Resources and waste from the allotment itself are managed responsibly, and alternative consumption is also encouraged. It is a local leisure space, non-consumerist and non-competitive, where people can reconnect with nature and the community.
