Renaturalisation of green spaces
More green, more life
Barcelona is committed to transforming green spaces in order to adapt to climate change and promote biodiversity. With the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to the tune of over 3 million euros (40% of the cost of the projects), four green spaces in the city will be renaturalised.
Parc del Poblenou, Passeig de les Bateries on Montjuïc, the space under the Font del Cuento fountain in Parc del Guinardó and Parc del Turó de la Peira are the locations where various initiatives will be carried out aimed at developing and consolidating the green infrastructure to promote naturalisation and resilience.
Objectives
Improve urban green infrastructure
Transform urban areas into more sustainable green spaces and integrate the city's green infrastructure, in accordance with the 2020-2030 Nature Plan, through the naturalisation of 45,849 m² in different parks and spaces.
Adapt to climate change and promote biodiversity
Make green spaces more resilient to the effects of climate change, especially given the drought, and support the city's natural ecosystems in order to improve ecological connectivity between green corridors.
Participation of citizens in the design of public space
Improve the quality of life of the neighbourhood through the renaturalisation of a public space, encouraging citizen involvement in the design, maintenance and use of parks and gardens.
Actions
Barcelona has more than 1,100 hectares of public municipal greenery, managed by the Municipal Institute of Parks and Gardens. The drought of the past four years and its effects on parks and gardens make it necessary to renaturalise these spaces, incorporating actions such as ensuring the permeability of the ground, and increasing the number of climate shelters and biodiversity refuges with the aim of adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change.
The project proposes action in four areas, all situated in green corridors of ecological importance, and also incorporates accessibility and gender perspective actions. Of the four intervention areas, selected in accordance with a green corridor model in the 2020-2030 Nature Plan, two are located in the coastal corridor and two in a semi-woodland environment.
Data will be collected during the different phases of the project – before, during and after the work – based on a complete set of indicators, which includes environmental, biodiversity and citizen-related aspects, over the four years that the project is being carried out.
