The female peregrine falcon nesting at the Sagrada Família laid her first eggs early in March. After a full month of incubation, the first of the chicks has now hatched.

The live images from the camera installed in the nest show the male bringing food to the female, mainly little birds, which she uses to feed herself and the chick. In the meantime, she is still sitting on the other three eggs, which should hatch in the next few days.

Peregrine falcon reintroduction project

In 2003, a pair of adult peregrine falcons took up residence in one of the Sagrada Família’s towers as part of Barcelona City Council and Galanthus Natura’s peregrine falcon reintroduction project, which was launched in 1999.

The basilica was chosen as one of the ideal sites for this initiative, as it was one of the last refuges where this species bred in Barcelona before disappearing. When spring is just around the corner, falcons have been coming to nest at the Sagrada Família for over twenty years now.

A webcam has been installed in the nest so that people can follow the falcons’ breeding season, which is usually between March and April.
