Latin American literature

The continent of Latin America is a veritable melting pot with an extraordinarily diverse range of climates, environments and cultures. Its literary voices are the natural expression of this wealth.

The Gabriel García Márquez Library, starting from the imaginary of the author of the same name, aims to make known this immense treasure trove of references, stories, chronicles, poems and reflections which make up the literary canon of Latin American literature.

From the classics to the latest young authors, from the most exuberant fantasy to reports that stick firmly to the facts, the library's specialisation offers a collection and a cultural dynamic for gathering, disseminating and promoting this magical-real, real magical legacy.

Barcelona has links to Latin American authors that go way back. Particularly since the main writers from the literary movement, known as the Boom, moved to Barcelona between the 1960s and 1970s with the support of the literary agent Carme Balcells.

Beyond its bibliographic collection, the library aspires to become a centre for spreading Latin American culture through dissemination and cultural promotion activities organised under the umbrella of the close ties Biblioteques de Barcelona has with Casa Amèrica Catalunya.
