Menja llibres

“Menja Llibres” is a play-based education project intended to foster a taste for reading and improvement of the oral and vehicular language of young children in their initial learning stage, to boost their educational, social and affective development.

Through a series of recreational activities linked to reading, language and oral expression, facilitated at schools by two organisations with a technical and monitoring team, children are invited to explore the numerous possibilities offered by reading and generate significant and emotionally stimulating experiences.

The main goals of the programme are to:

  • Support the development of reading skills and in particular a taste for reading among young children in their second and third years of primary school.
  • Foster the involvement of families as basic educational players.
  • Favour equal opportunities and equity, through joint work by the community, the local area, families and schools.
  • Introduce libraries as attractive spaces for reading and leisure.

During term time, “Menja llibres” receives advice from Barcelona Libraries and has access to their books. Visits are also organised so children can become familiar with libraries as places for reading and spending their free time.

The libraries collaborating with “Menja Llibres” are:

Sant Pau - Santa Creu Library
Poble-sec - Francesc Boix Library
El Carmel - Juan Marsé Library
Nou Barris Library
Les Roquetes - Rafa Juncadella Library
Zona Nord Library
Trinitat Vella - José Barbero Library
Ramon d’Alòs - Moner Library

This initiative is one of the activities in the current rollout of the Neighbourhood Plan by Barcelona City Council. It is backed by Foment de Ciutat, the Barcelona Education Consortium, the ICUB (Barcelona Culture Institute) and Barcelona Libraries.
